Guaymas is reachable by bus or car from the closest airport: Hermosillo (HMO).
The most direct route is to fly from Madrid → Mexico City → Hermosillo.
Aeromexico is the recommended airline as it offers more connecting flights.
Iberia has two itineraries but long waits for connections.
Another good option is to add a stop-over to your flight and visit another place in México (see below).
Please feel free to add any of these stops to your itinerary to make the most of your transatlantic travel. For travel within Mexico, flying with Volaris, Aeromexico, or VivaAerobus are all good options.
Mexico City
As the capital city, it has several direct flights per day from/to Madrid and Hermosillo, giving travelers a lot of flexibility. CDMX is a great place to have a “classic” Mexican experience. It has many museums and archeological locations where you can get acquainted with Mexican history and culture. There is also a lovely art scene, perfectly complemented by great dining options and an active nightlife.
Guadalajara
The "Pearl of the West" offers a vibrant taste of Mexican culture. With its colonial architecture, bustling markets, and the sounds of mariachi music filling the air, Guadalajara provides a rich and authentic experience. The city boasts beautiful cathedrals, like the iconic Guadalajara Cathedral, and numerous plazas perfect for soaking in the local atmosphere. No trip to Guadalajara is complete without experiencing the nearby town of Tequila and learning about the process of making this iconic spirit.
Ensenada, Baja California
Ensenada is not really a stop-over, but it will always be our second home. We lived and met there many years ago and still have many good friends there. The area has an outstanding natural beauty and is a perfect wine and dine destination. The wineries in Valle de Guadalupe offer a perfect backdrop for a relaxing weekend with award-winning wines, Michelin-stared restaurants, and stunning sunsets.
Aeromexico and Iberia offer connecting flights to Tijuana, from where you can take a 2-hour bus to Ensenada directly from the airport and back or rent a car and take the beautiful scenic toll road to Ensenada.
Other stop-over destinations with direct flights from Madrid are Cancún and Monterrey.
Our bus company of choice is Tufesa.
They arrive and depart from their own station.
Uber or taxis can take you from the airport to the Tufesa bus station.
The one-way price is around $220 MXN (about 10 EUR).
Guaymas is southbound on Federal Highway 15.
Highway 15 is toll-free, has 4 lanes, and has light to medium traffic.
Distance is about 145 km which takes around 90 minutes to drive.
